by Peter F. Hamilton

Yes, I think my rating is entirely justified. Details follow. There is absolutely nothing I can say that would not be a spoiler at this point; even if I mention a character it means the person in question survived the events of the first book - yet another spoiler. Anyhow all of the interesting people left alive at the end of Reality Dysfunction are back with the vengeance; no exception.

Even some occasional people one mi No, your eyes are not deceiving you: I gave this mammoth of a book 5 stars. Even some occasional people one might think were goners are back and this is done in a non-cheesy way, trust me. It took the author about pages of the first book to do the proper world building.

Considering that we are talking about countless planets, asteroids, and stars this number does not look too big. It will however test your patience to the limits. As a reward last pages or so were non-stop action with large space battles and serious ground operations by futuristic military. I have to make an acknowledgement where it is due: Peter F. Hamilton managed to completely avoid the dreadful Middle Book of a Trilogy Syndrome, something that plagued a lot of great writers including the Grand Master of fantasy J.

Tolkien himself. This middle book is not boring by any definition of the word. This tale starts right where the previous installment ended and this means a middle of the action. The said action is going on for the whole book my edition has pages with some very occasional much-needed slowdowns. The latter are helpful as they allow to catch your breath. Also plot twists; plot twists everywhere, any time - especially when you least expect them. Add to this interesting characters and some surprising appearances of unexpected guest stars there is no way in hell I am going to spoil this and my rating will not come as a big surprise.

To be completely honest I have to note that while the first book has a nice closure this one ends in a complete cliffhanger which for some reason somewhat failed to live up to the rest of the book; in other words it was a little underwhelming after all the excitement. People say the last book is fairly bad and if they are right it would be a shame after such a great start.

Book Review - Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton

As you would expect, from the events surrounding the Reality Dysfunction, there are some heavy religious and philosophical themes present. There are also a number of rather unsavory torture scenes, which, well The Neutronium Alchemist deals with the different factions in the Confederacy, and how they attempt to deal with the Reality Dysfunction. Expect a lot of moral grey areas and a betrayal or ten.

  • Oh, and of course, there is a little something on the device of the title as well I think just waiting passively for this problem to be resolved somewhere else would be a vast mistake. Have I mentioned that there are a few stomach churning torture scenes? There are also some awe-inspiring sequences. How could he?

How is it even possible to review a book jammed with a future galactic civilization getting invaded by the dead of all history? Succinctly, I suppose. Ah, well, at least the book is epic as hell.
